The Colorado Avalanche might know by Thursday if captain Joe Sakic intends to return to the team for the 2008-09 NHL season.
According to the Denver Post, Sakic has scheduled a news conference Thursday before his charity golf tournament in Colorado. While there is no guarantee that Sakic will discuss his intentions, time is running out, as Avalanche veterans are scheduled to report to training camp for physicals on September 19.
When contacted by the Post on Monday, Sakic's agent Don Baizley said the 19-year veteran is still undecided.
"The hang-up is whether Joe's up for the task," Baizley told the Post. "He sets the bar pretty high, and he needs to make sure he's up for the task."
Sakic is an unrestricted free agent, but if he returns to the NHL, it's believed that he will only return to Colorado.
Baizley also updated the status of his other prominent Avalanche free agent, Peter Forsberg.
"Peter would like to play if his foot problems are solved, and he's checking away at that." Baizley told the Post.
Forsberg, who has been plagued by foot problems for the last few seasons has recently started skating again in Sweden.[avatar]http://th65.photobucket.com/albums/h235/victoria716/NHL/th_hockey-2.gif[/avatar]
