It was a cool and clear early afternoon on that spring day.
Early game set that day it being a Sunday and the last game
of the NHL regular season for the teams involved. I arrived early
hoping to speak to my team Captain before the warm-ups for
some last minute guidance. He was, you see, unaware that what
would normally be a run of the mill, last game of the season
where team points rarely are impactful, was actually one of
great significance in the lives of faithful fans. I after all,
was the owner of The FHL Capitals, whom had been battling it
out with The FHL Rangers in game three of the FHL Cup Finals
since Friday. I was thus far losing.
My goalies Marty Turco, and Dwayne Roloson had been
standing on their heads for weeks now, but their job for the
year was over and they had performed outstandingly. Turco
won the league MVP that year. Fitting because he was the first
free agent I drafted upon entrance to the league. As I said
though, their jobs were done.
With names still ringing in my head such as Morrison,
Kovalchuk, and St. Louis... Oh St.Louis, It was time for a
hero to step up. I was down, with only two players left, and
so Jeremy Roenick steps off the bus into the Nassau Veterans
Memorial Colliseum parking lot. Like a knight climbing off of his
steed, the prestigious and magestic Captain makes his way
off the team bus and into destiny. "J.R.", I said, "this is a big
game for me here today". He replies, "why, what did you bet
on it or something"? "Well sorta, I'm in the greatest
Fantasy Hockey League on Earth and I'm playing for the
championship today", I Relinquished. Smiling he utters,
"whadya want from ME"? "Well, as captain of my team I'd like
to see you light the lamp today!", I exclaimed. About to
laugh he says, "don't worry I was planning on it... (He
proceeds to sign my jersey) Captain Huh? Hell, as long as
I'm the captain I'll get you two!" He then handed me my
jersey and he entered the building.
I tried to get to Adrian Aucoin, my other player in the game
that day, but to no avail he was already in the building. Alas, it
made no difference because Aucoin scored a powerplay goal.
As for Roenick, He delivered his promised two goals and won me
The Fantasy Hockey League Championship for the 2003 Season...
A Hero was born... And it was Party time.
